THE principal of a Belfast girls' secondary school has written to parents after an incident in which a pupil was approached by a man while walking home.

Girls Model head Emelyn Wright alerted parents after a man made an approach to the girl in the Joanmount Gardens area on Tuesday.

Mr Wright said he "did not wish to cause significant alarm or distress", but added that all students had been given advice on dealing with strangers who approached them and reminded the pupils that they should walk home "in a pair."

He wrote: "The PSNI are looking for a white male with a local accent in relation to this incident and have assured me that there will be enhanced after-school patrols in the area around the school in coming days."

Police say they are investigating reports that a man approached a schoolgirl in "suspicious circumstances" and have appealed to anyone with information to conact them at Tennent Street PSNI station.
