A WOMAN rescued from a Co Antrim cliff top has been taken to hospital.

The Coastguard and Royal Navy search team winched the woman to safety after she became trapped on the scenic Gobbins cliffs near Islandmagee at 8.30pm on Tuesday.

Lifeboats from Larne and Bangor also assisted in the rescue operation.

The woman was taken to a Belfast hospital but her condition is not yet known.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council said the rescue took place from the Gobbins Cliffs and "did not occur on or around the Gobbins Cliff Path Walk tourist attraction".

"The Gobbins takes safety and security seriously. When the Gobbins attraction is closed to the public, it cannot be accessed after hours and the site is secured.

"The Gobbins tourist attraction is open as normal today and taking bookings."

Thousands of tourists have visited the Gobbins walk since it re-opened earlier this year. Last month, the tourist attraction was closed after emergency services were called to help an elderly man who fainted.
