AS weekends go, they won’t get much better for Michael Magill.

The Antrim star married Eimear Close on Friday but kept the champagne on ice for 48 hours until he won his first county championship title with Cargin.

Magill played at corner-forward for the Erin’s Own club last Sunday as they recorded a nine point win over Lamh Dhearg in Ahoghill to seal their first county title since 2006.

“It was a bit of a rollercoaster of a weekend,” he admitted as celebrations went on among the Cargin players and supporters on Sunday.

And when it came to ranking the events he said there was only one winner: “If I said anything different I’d be in trouble, but easily number one is the wedding – it was unbelievable.

“At the final whistle all the emotions came out and I turned into a big woman there for about 20 minutes crying and what not, it meant a lot to me.”

The former Tir na nOg, Randalstown clubman added: “This is my first-ever championship. It’s my third year with Cargin and we lost the final the last two years. You can never prepare for it, you don’t know how it feels.

“My head wasn’t in the right place but the boys were fantastic – it’s been one of the best weekend’s of my life. I don’t think I’ll have a better one – I’d have to get remarried and I hope to God that’s not the case.”

Another inter-county star who made a rapid switch from altar to pitch at the weekend was Derry and Greenlough forward Enda Lynn.

The Oak Leaf frontman was married on Saturday but he delayed his honeymoon to line out for the St Oliver Plunkett’s against Down champions Loughinisland in the Ulster Intermediate Club quarter-final. Lynn top scored with six points, but Greenlough lost 2-15 to 0-11 in Newry.
