AN off-duty police officer was arrested on suspicion of causing the death of an Omagh man in a crash, The Irish News understands.

The victim, aged 49, has been named locally as Paul Mills, who was originally from Omagh but lived in the Killyclogher area.

Mr Mills was killed following a collision with another vehicle on the Dromore Road on the outskirts of Omagh shortly after 10pm on Saturday.

Police said that a 40-year-old woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

She was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

The Irish News understands that the woman is a police officer who was off-duty at the time of the crash.

Police said that the woman's Saab Vector vehicle may have also been involved in a collision with a white Peugeot 207 earlier in the evening.

Mr Mills, who was previously involved with Killyclogher GAA, is believed to have worked in an engineering and construction firm in Omagh and is survived by his wife and two children, one at primary school and the other at secondary school.

Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer said: "While Killyclogher is preparing with great excitement for the Tyrone county football final today I am conscious that another family has been plunged into great sadness. I want to express my sympathies to the family of this man."

Tributes posted on social media described Mr Mills as "a genuine, quiet, good man" and "a lovely guy."

The Dromore Road was closed for more than 12 hours as emergency services and police attended to the scene.

Inspector Stephen Humphries said: "We have spoken to a number of witnesses however we know that other motorists who have not yet come forward were travelling on the road last night and they may have information that could assist in the investigation."
