A DONEGAL nightclub has changed the name of a “Sh*g a Ginger” student night following outrage from local clergy and parents.

Pulse Nightclub in Letterkenny offered to admit red-headed students free of charge as well as dye other revellers' hair red. It also offered free condoms.

However, following a wave of protest, including a priest and parents contacting gardai, management changed the name of last night's promotion to “Kiss Me I’m Ginger”.

The nightclub issued a statement confirming the change.

It said: “Given recent controversy surrounding a promotional poster advertising the event, the management have removed it and wish to make it clear it was not their intention to cause insult or offence to anyone.

“The promotion of such events on student nights are common place throughout the county and have occurred in the past without knowingly causing offence.”

The 'Pulse Student Letterkenny' Facebook page promoted the new name with pictures of stockpiles of ginger hair dye as well as Tam o’ Shanter red wigs.

The nightclub still offered to admit red-heads free before midnight last night, promoting the event as: “Kiss Me I’m Ginger (The most talked about student night this year).”

The decision to change the name followed severe criticism from Glenfin parish priest Fr Lorcan Ó Searcaigh, who claimed the original name was an insult to red-heads.

Fr Ó Searcaigh said: “I was disgusted to hear the theme of this event. The parents really feel that it’s a form of bullying.”

He said last night he was happy the name was changed and was sure parents would be too.
