A CHIMNEY sweep from Co Tyrone fell from a roof and died less than a fortnight after walking his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day.

Eugene Campbell from Donaghmore was working on a house when the accident happened on Monday.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating.

Mr Campbell, a grandfather-of-four thought to be aged in his late fifties, worked for decades as a sweep and was also known as a talented singer and musician.

He walked his daughter Simone (27) down the aisle when she married Gregory Hamilton on September 19.

She shared pictures from the precious day and paid a simple online tribute that read: “Love you forever, daddy.”

It is thought the newlyweds were on their honeymoon in America when Mr Campbell died.

Friends and relatives have paid tribute to the father-of-four on social media. One friend said a “bright light” had gone out.

Ulster Unionist councillor Kenneth Reid, who knew Mr Campbell, said his death was an “awful tragedy” that had shocked the community.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and wider family circle. The community is absolutely stunned at the loss of a genuine, hardworking, decent and trustworthy man,” he said.

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Neil Somerville said Mr Campbell was originally from Clogher but lived in Donaghmore for many years.

“Thousands of homes had their chimneys cleaned each year and he will be a sad loss to the local community. He was always in huge demand and was an expert in his field,” the UUP representative said.

“He was also an accomplished musician and did much work for local charities.”

A Health and Safety Executive spokeswoman said: “The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland has been notified of an incident resulting in the death of a chimney sweep in the Dungannon area and is currently investigating.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this most difficult time.”

Mr Campbell is survived by his wife Marion, children Ashley, Chantelle, Nadine and Simone and grandchildren Emily, Nicholas, Mollie and Finn.

His Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11am tomorrow at the Church of St John the Baptist in Galbally with burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Donaghmore, afterwards.
