A poignant photograph of a smiling Conall Kerrigan – taken just hours before the GAA player’s tragic death - has been released by police in an effort to find out more information about his final hours.

Police do not believe the 25-year-old from Claudy died as a result of a crime.

However, they are still anxious to obtain more information about what happened after he was last seen in Derry city centre early on Sunday morning.

Mr Kerrigan, a prominent member of Claudy GAA club John Mitchels, was on a night out with club mates when he went missing.

He was last seen leaving the Metro Bar in the early hours and his body was not found until Sunday night lying, between Derry’s walls and the rear of the city’s Millennium Forum.

Mr Kerrigan was found by a cousin who was part of a search team made up of Claudy club mates.

The last picture of the young plumber taken on Saturday evening shows him smiling with friends as he enjoyed his night out.

A police spokesman said: “This is a picture of Conall Kerrigan taken on the night he went out, wearing the clothes he was last seen in.

"Detectives at Strand Road would like to hear from anyone who saw him on the city walls or in the Foyle Street area.”

Police have also revealed that Mr Kerrigan’s wallet may have been stolen from him on the night he died.

The spokesman said: “No wallet was found in his possession. However, after extensive searches it was recovered by police.

“As part of our appeal, we would like to hear from anyone who was in the city centre generally on Sunday morning and knows or has heard of attempts to steal wallets from other.”

Mr Kerrigan’s funeral takes place later today from his parents’ home at Brecanlea in Claudy to St Patrick’s Church for 11am Requiem Mass.

He will be buried immediately afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
