Three men are recovering after falling from a crane while working on a boat at Derry port.

The men fell into the vessel from a height of 20 ft at Lisahally while working on a crane yesterday morning. They had been helping to load a boat.

It is understood the men were being lowered into the cargo when they fell out of the cradle of the crane to the bottom of the hold. All three remained conscious throughout their ordeal.

One suffered neck and back injuries while a second was treated for injuries to his back. The third victim suffered minor injuries. All three were taken to Altnagelvin hospital although their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Both the port authorities and the Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive have launched separate investigations into the incident.

Derry Sinn Féin assembly member, Raymond McCartney said any investigation into the incident should be as thorough as possible.

"The health and safety of workers must be paramount in every working environment and the results and any recommendations emanating from any investigation must be rigorously implemented and adhered to," Mr McCartney said.
