GRAVESTONES at a cemetery in west Belfast have been smashed by vandals with a sledgehammer.

It happened in a graveyard on Hannahstown Hill on Tuesday.

PSNI inspector Alan Swann said yesterday the damage has caused "distress" to the local community.

He appealed for anyone with information about the incident to get in touch.

"Substantial damage was caused to gravestones at a graveyard on Hannahstown Hill, sometime between midnight and 10.30am. It is believed a sledgehammer was used," he said.

"This damage has caused distress to the local community and I would appeal to anyone with information to call the police on the non-emergency number 101 or if you wish to remain anonymous, call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
