A Belfast restaurant has been voted the best in Northern Ireland for the second year in a row.

James Street South has been named as the north's best restaurant in the 2016 Waitrose Good Food Guide Reader's Restaurant of the Year Awards.

The restaurant, owned by Niall and Joanne McKenna, was nominated by its customers. It previously won the title in 2008 and 2015.

Mr McKenna, the restaurant's head chef, is a regular contributor to The Irish News.

The awards honour the best restaurants, pubs and cafes in Britain and the north.

Elizabeth Carter, Waitrose Good Food Guide Editor said: "This is a restaurant that has always pushed the boundaries of new combinations of flavours and tastes, with a great wine menu and good value lunch and dinner deals."

Mr McKenna said the restaurant was thrilled by the award.

"This prestigious accolade underlines our focus on quality, innovative cooking, locally-sourced produce, great staff and a warm ambience," he said.

"It comes as we launch the second year of our Apprentice Scheme, a further measure of our commitment to ensuring the future of excellence in the Northern Ireland hospitality sector."
