FIVE men were being questioned last night by detectives investigating the attempted murder of police in a bomb blast in Co Armagh.

Dissident republicans targeted PSNI officers by luring them to Victoria Street in Lurgan last Saturday.

Officers responded to a call that an unexploded device had been thrown at a police patrol.

But as the officers searched for the device, later discovered to be a hoax, a suspected anti-personnel bomb exploded.

No-one was injured in the explosion.

Police said the five suspects, aged 28, 31 and 36, and two 46-year-olds, were detained in Co Armagh.

Detective Superintendent Karen Baxter said: "A number of properties have been searched and several items have been removed for forensic examination. The suspects have been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim police station for questioning.

"This is an active and on-going investigation. I would like to thank the community for their continued patience and support.

"If you know anything about the incident last weekend when a report of a device, which turned out not to be viable, was made to lure police into the area and a second significant device exploded, please contact police."
