AN IRISH nun has been rescued from a lift in Rome after being stuck for three days without food or water.

The 58-year-old and another nun aged 69 from New Zealand were taken to hospital suffering from dehydration but were otherwise in good health.

The pair were guests of the Marist Sisters House on Friday when they became stuck in a lift because of a power failure.

They made attempts to call for help but no-one heard their cries because the building was completely empty over the weekend.

Neither had a mobile phone.

A cleaner raised the alarm on Monday after she arrived at the convent and received no answer from the nuns when she rang the doorbell.

When officers entered they heard the women calling: "Yes, we are here, in the elevator", according to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.

The two nuns later said they had "prayed so much" while trapped.

The Marist Sister House hosts visitors to Rome from religious missions around the world.
