The family of an IRA man shot dead by undercover British soldiers has held an independent commemoration for the first time.

George McBreaty (23) died along with another republican, Charles Maguire (21), during a shoot-out with members of the 14th Intelligence Company in Derry in May 1981.

Mr McBrearty's brother Pat, who suffered from mental illness and took his own life on his 10th anniversary, was also remembered at the event.

The IRA mans 86-year-old mother Bridie was one of several hundred people who gathered at the republican memorial in the citys Creggan estate.

Mr McBreatys family claim that some posters and banners put up around Derry advertising the commemoration were removed.

Relatives laid wreaths while prominent Tyrone republican Frankie Quinn, who was a friend of Mr McBreaty, gave an address.

Mr McBrearty's brother Danny said it was the familys intention to ensure that George was remembered for who he was and what he died for without any revisionism or attempt at electoral gain".

We believe that it is only right that republican families, if they wish, are supported to remember their loved ones for the cause for which they died in whatever way they see fit, without external interference or detraction.
