YORKGATE Movie House has said it hopes to re-open this morning after being closed yesterday due to a fire in its production room.

Around four fire crews were dispatched to the Belfast movie theatre at 12.20pm yesterday, before the cinema was open to the public, and the Fire Service said the incident was brought under control by 2pm.

The cinema did not open and remained closed throughout the day.

Assistant Group Commander Geoff Somerville said that management at Movie House were to be "commended" for evacuating the area.

He said: "The fire was in the production room at the Movie Theatre and was due to a fault in production equipment."

"There was a small electrical device which was damaged in the fire. The main issue was smoke damage in the production room. The cinemas themselves were not affected."

A spokeswoman for Movie House Cityside said: "It (the fire) occurred in an area that is not used by the public and the cinema was not open at the time. Due to smoke damage the cinema was closed today but the company hopes to re-open on Thursday or Friday."
