Leading dissident republican Gary Donnelly has criticised attacks on homes and cars belonging to Sinn Féin members in Derry.

The independent member of Derry City and Strabane District Council was speaking after Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness blamed dissidents.

Two men, aged 17 and 23, have been questioned after cars belonging to Sinn Féin councillors Colly Kelly and Sandra Duffy were set on fire in the city on Tuesday night.

The attacks followed the paint bombing on Mr McGuinness’s home and an arson attack on a car belonging to a Sinn Féin activist Sean McMonagle.

Bomb threats were also issued to MEP Martina Anderson and assembly member Raymond McCartney.

Mr McGuinness said he had no doubt that “anti-democratic dissidents” were behind the attacks.

However, Mr Donnelly, a leading member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, said he was opposed to such actions.

“Whilst I am not aware of the motivation behind these particular attacks, I want to make it clear that they cannot be justified by any political ideology."

Meanwhile, police have said they found "nothing untoward" after reports of a bomb left at the west Belfast home of Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams.
