University of Limerick releases Bowie book

A MAJOR book of essays on the career of pop star David Bowie, edited by three University of Limerick academics, has hit the shelves.

David Bowie: Critical Perspectives contains 18 essays on the star's work as a singer, songwriter, performer, actor and artist.

It contains essays by a range of international scholars on Bowie's work, which have been edited by Eoin Devereux, Aileen Dillane and Martin J Power from the University of Limerick. The foreword is provided by the internationally renowned singer and actor Gavin Friday.

Dr Devereux said: "Bowie, pictured, is truly an iconic figure. Our book examines in detail one of the most complex figures within the history of popular music. "Being true to the subject matter of our book, it crosses a number of academic disciplines in attempting to unpack what David Bowie is all about."

The book examines Bowie's more recent recording work and provides new details on the making of his 1980 ground-breaking video for the song Ashes to Ashes.

Dr Devereux added: "The book will appeal to academics but will also be of interest to Bowie fans."
