US writer tops 'borrowed' list

FIFTY Shades of Grey may be one of the best-selling books of the last few years, but the controversial novel was not among the most borrowed books from the north's libraries, according to new figures.

Prolific US writer James Patterson took first and third places on the list, with his co-written novels Private Down Under and thriller Mistress.

The top ten most-borrowed books between July 2013 and June 2014 include children's fiction, thrillers and crime novels.

Popular children's picture book Goldilocks and the Three Bears was the second-most borrowed book, according to the Public Lending Right office.

Booker long-listed novel The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce came fourth on the list.

US writer Dan Brown wrote the most-borrowed book in the north and Britain. His 2014 novel Inferno beat English thriller writer Lee Child, whose novels Never Go Back and A Wanted Man clinched the second and third spots.

Children's books Horrid Henry Tricks The Tooth Fairy by Francesca Simon & Tony Ross as well as Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules also made the top 10.
