Letter bomb sent to police HQ addressed to Hamilton

A

LETTER bomb delivered to PSNI headquarters in east Belfast was addressed to Chief Constable George Hamilton.

Staff at the Knock Road complex raised the alarm after the suspicious package was delivered on Thursday morning. British army bomb disposal experts were called and the road was closed for several hours.

It reopened shortly before 5pm.

The complex, which houses the offices of senior officers including Mr Hamilton, remained open throughout. The bomb expert made the device safe. Last year parcel bombs were sent to

army recruitment offices in England by the dissident group calling itself the IRA. A similar device was also sent to Stormont Castle addressed to Secretary of State Theresa Villiers.

A letter bomb addressed to former chief constable Matt Baggott was intercepted at the Royal Mail sorting office in Belfast.
