Republican dissidents urged to lift death threats

DISSIDENT republicans have been urged to lift a number of death threats and expulsion orders made against men in Co Donegal.

Sinn Féin TD Padraig MacLochlainn claimed at least one man has fled the county and two brothers are under death threat from IRA-members based in Derry. Gardai have confirmed they have notified some people of dissident threats against them recently.

The threats are just the latest in a series of actions by dissident republicans in the Republic.

While the Provisional IRA carried out many actions south of the border, the over-all policy was that the organisation should not operate in such a fashion in the Republic. However, the new IRA - through its previous entities, including the Real IRA and Republican Action Against Drugs - has been extremely active in the Republic.

Raad was behind the murder of Derry man, Andrew Allen in Buncrana in February 2012 and carried out other shooting and arson attacks in the border area of Co Donegal. The Real IRA also admitted a number of murders in Dublin and Cork.

In the latest incidents, two brothers were told to leave their homes in Donegal within 48 hours or face being shot, according to Inishowen TD, Mr MacLochlainn.

The Sinn Féin politician said neither of the brothers were involved in crime in any way but had been accused of being drug dealers.
