Wedding of former Down ace Hughes

FORMER GAA all-star Danny Hughes picked up special prize of a different kind yesterday when he tied the knot with new bride Anne Burke.

The Irish News columnist and former Down ace was on target as family and friends joined the happy couple when they shared nuptials at Sacred Heart Church in Killowen, near Rostrevor, yesterday. They later travelled the short distance to the Ballymascanlon Hotel

in Co Louth for a night of celebration where they were joined by Down players both past and present including Dan McCartan, Ronan Murtagh, Ronan Sexton and Paul Murphy. Beautician Anne (30) isn't the first member of her

clan to marry into the Down GAA family - her sister Michelle is married to former county man Martin Cole.

The newlyweds will honeymoon in Mexico and Las Vegas before returning to Saval where they intend to set up home.

A former All-Ireland finalist, Danny scored three points in the 2010 decider when the Mourne men were defeated narrowly by Cork.

The Saval club man went on to pick up an all-star for his performances that year.
