Ministers muddle McIlroy's Majors

SO KEEN were Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness to congratulate Rory McIlroy on his latest golfing success, that they elevated him to even greater golfing prowess.

Hours after the Holywood golfer clinched the US PGA Championship title at Valhalla, the first and deputy first minister got their golfing lines a little crossed.

In a joint statement they congratulated the world number one player for achieving a "career Grand Slam having now won all four of golf's major titles".

While the 25-year-old may have won four of golf's biggest titles, he has not yet won the US Masters, the last piece of the four-major Grand Slam.

They said: "Rory has achieved a career Grand Slam having now won all four of golf's major titles.

"He is a sporting sensation and joins an impressive list of champions to win back-to-back majors."

But just 10 minutes after the statement was issued, the DUP and Sinn Fein leaders' office, which includes eight highly paid special advisers, corrected the error.

In a swiftly redrawn statement from the ministers read: "Rory has played stunning golf to claim his fourth Major title. He is a sporting sensation and joins an impressive list of champions to win back-to-back majors.

"We are incredibly proud to watch as he writes his story of golfing greatness and we look forward to the next chapter as these victories propel him towards being the golfer of his generation."

McIlroy has become the third youngest player of the modern era - after Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus - to win four of golf's biggest prizes. He also became the first man to win back-to-back majors since Ireland's Padraig Harrington in 2008.

He celebrated the continuation of his stunning run of form by flying to New York by private jet.

The multi-millionaire and his entourage boarded a flight to New York after he sealed his victory in Valhalla on Sunday and tweeted an obligatory 'selfie' along the way.

He told followers: "Flying high with the team after my 4th Major victory!!! NYC here we come!! Thanks for all the support and well wishes".

McIlroy has won his last three tournaments, including his first Open Championship last month.

Yesterday he posted another picture of himself, this time holding the US PGA trophy and the Claret Jug.

He tweeted: "The summer of 2014 is one I'll never forget!! #backtobackmajors".
