Soldier to be remembered

A SOLDIER who was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery will be remembered at a commemoration in Co Tyrone marking the centenary of the First World War.

Newmills and District Victoria Cross Group will commemorate Private Robert Morrow who is one of only eight people in the north to be awarded the Victoria Cross medal for their actions in the 1914-1918 Great War.

The event on Tuesday August 5 in Carland Presbyterian Church will include the unveiling of a plaque to the 25-year-old who was killed days after being awarded the medal for digging buried comrades out of the mud and carrying them to safety while under enemy fire. He died before receiving the medal and his mother donated it to the Inniskillen Fusiliers Museum for safe keeping.

A week-long programme to mark the centenary of the war will kick off with an event in Newmills Community Hall on August 4 which includes a display of the First World War memorabilia and a series of talks.

Other events during the week include family activities, a football match, a variety concert and a service at the village's war memorial on August 10.
