Prosecution warning

THE Parades Commission has warned that people taking part in Orange Order marches

which deliberately stop in protest at the decision to ban the Ardoyne evening parade "could be liable for prosecution". Earlier this week order chiefs

revealed plans to stop all main marches taking part in today's parade for six minutes in protest at the ban.

However, the Parades Commission warned that such a move during some parades could be a breach of the law. The commission regularly issues legally binding determinations for parades which are deemed "sensitive". Often restrictions are placed on contentious parades including the condition that there should be "no undue stoppages or delays" during certain marches.

A Parades Commission spokesman said: "If a determination details that there should be no undue stoppages or delays when a parade is in progress, any breach of that condition will be a matter for the police to investigate and those involved could be liable for prosecution. "The commission will take previous behaviour and any proven breaches into account in reaching future decisions."
