Man charged with assault on Sinn Fein MP's brother

A CO TYRONE man has appeared in court charged with assaulting the brother of Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew. Alwyn Orr, of Moygashel Lane in Moygashel, is accused of assaulting Felim Óg Gildernew, whose father is Dungannon councillor Phelim Gildernew. The 43-year-old also faces charges of criminal damage to Sinn Féin election posters and possessing a pen knife in a public place, namely Main Road in the village of Moygashel. The alleged offences are said to have happened on Thursday May 22 - the night of the local and European elections. No plea was entered when the charges were put to the defendant at Dungannon Magistrates Court last Wednesday. He was released on continuing bail and the case was adjourned until July 2. Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew was seen celebrating with her father Phelim at the Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt last month. Mr Gildernew, a former Sinn Féin mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, was re-elected to sit on the new Mid Ulster council. He was elected to the Clogher Valley district electoral area on the first count with 1,528 first-preference votes, coming a close second to the DUP's Frances Burton who topped the poll with 1,584 first preferences. * ELECTION: Right, Michelle and her father Phelim Gildernew at the local election count last month.
