Prisoner jailed for three more months

A prisoner who phoned his ex-girlfriend and threatened to "cut her to pieces" with a machete after finding out she was pregnant was jailed for three more months yesterday.

James Gerard Donegan (25), from carnhill in Derry, admitted threatening to kill the woman and her new boyfriend on August 7 during a call from Magilligan jail.

When arrested he told police he'd acted in the heat of the moment when he found out that his ex-girl-friend was pregnant by another man.

A defence barrister told district Judge Barney Mcelholm at Derry Magistrate's court that Donegan had "re-acted to the news of the pregnancy in an impulsive and immature manner". Mr Mcelholm described Donegan's record of 61 previous convictions as appalling and also imposed a five-year restraining order.
