Pressure group launches unofficial border poll

AN UNOFFICIAL poll on Irish unity has been launched in the Strabane-Lifford border area.

Organised by the 'united Ireland, You Decide' group, the poll will take place on Saturday November 23.

The poll is the second held by the group. In the first mini-referendum, in Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, there was a resounding vote for Irish unity.

Group chairwoman Grace McDermott said the poll aimed to raise awareness of the Good Friday Agreement provisions for a full referendum on Irish unity.

Ms McDermott, an active member of Sinn Fein, said the group was independent of her party and comprised a range of people including representatives of the GAA and the Irish-language education sector.

The poll will be open to all those aged 16 and over who live in the east electoral ward in Strabane, Co Tyrone, and the Clonleigh area of Lifford, Co Donegal.

"Our voice has been lost in this debate so far so we want to articulate how the border impacts on us. We want to start the debate at community level and we call for the people to have their say," Ms McDermott said.
