Paper settles suit brought by airline

A defamation action in the Republic brought by Ryanair against the Daily Mirror newspaper was settled out of court yesterday. The airline launched the action at the High Court in Dublin after the paper published articles based on a Channel 4 documentary that had claimed to reveal alleged safety and fuel issues at Ryanair. It also launched legal proceedings against Channel 4. The low-cost airline settled an action against the Daily Mail at the High Court in Belfast last month. Lawyers for the Daily Mirror told the court yesterday: "We acknowledge the Irish Aviation Authority's independent confirmation, on 15 August, that Ryanair 'fully complies with all european and international regulations in all of its operations', and the previous confirmation given on September 18 2012 of Ryanair's safety standards being 'on a par with the safest airlines in europe'." In a statement, solicitor for Ryanair, Belfast-based Paul tweed, said the company acknowledged the newspaper's "prompt and categoric statement setting the record straight". Mr tweed said Ryanair would continue to "vigorously pursue" a separate defamation action against Channel 4 in the High Court in Dublin.
