'Best ever' Feile launched

MUSIC acts including the Happy Mondays, dance act Faithless and rockers The Charlatans are set to perform at this year's Feile an Phobail which organisers have described as the "most exciting line-up ever seen".

As the west Belfast festival gears up to mark its 25th milestone it also revealed that Co Down comedian Patrick Kielty, folk singer Cara Dillon, classical group The Priests, and musician Sharon Shannon will also take part.

More than 250 events are planned across 50 venues for this year's Feile, which begins on August 1 and features music, comedy, drama, dance, debates and street tours.

Street parties are also scheduled for the 11-day festival.

This year's programme of events and acts was launched yesterday at the Conway Mill on the Falls Road.

Feile an Phobail director Kevin Gamble said it was the "most exciting line-up Feile has ever seen".

"In true Feile style, our 25th birthday is going to be a celebration of the very best of the west, and we're delighted to have so many big names taking part alongside the very best local talent," he said.

Culture minister Caral Ni Chuilin said the festival has been at the centre of the community for a quarter of a century.

"Despite growing into a prestigious international event the organisers have managed to retain their connection and the link with the local community.

"This is something to be celebrated and take pride in," she said.

Roisin McDonough, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said: "So many arts projects and practitioners have been inspired by the festival throughout its lifetime.
