Samsung has revealed a flexible display that can withstand several hits from a hammer without showing so much as a scratch.

The South Korean smartphone maker posted a video of the panel’s gruelling testing as it withstood 26 successive drops from a height of 1.2 metres as well as extreme temperatures.

Most displays with some damage endurance currently on the market use glass, but Samsung has opted for plastic, using an unbreakable substrate and an overlay window.

“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices, not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its light weight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, from the Samsung Display Company.

Beyond smartphones, Samsung believes the display could prove useful for car display consoles, mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablet PCs.

It’s too early to say when and where the screen will appear product-wise, so don’t expect it to feature on the upcoming Galaxy Note 9.
