An X Factor contestant impresses judges when he sings a track he has written about Danny Dyer’s character in EastEnders.
Benji Matthews, 17, succeeds in the Bootcamp stage of the ITV show with a song inspired by the relationship between Dyer and Kellie Bright’s Albert Square alter-egos, Mick and Linda.
“It’s just a little a love song inspired by characters on EastEnders if I’m being totally honest with you, Mick and Linda,” he said.
Simon Cowell called the teenager, from Cornwall, “a great songwriter” while fellow judge Sharon Osbourne said he was “fantastic”.
In other scenes, plasterer Sam Black, 27, walks away happy despite getting a “no” from judges.
After learning that he has not made it through to the next stage of the talent contest, he gets a “yes” from his girlfriend when he pops the question on stage.
He asks Emma, who has been sitting in the audience, to marry him, as Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, Osbourne and Louis Walsh look on.
The plasterer, from the Isle of Man, had previously told the judges that he “lives” for his girlfriend of five years, and their eight-month-old baby, saying “she’s my rock”.
Judges and the arena audience are open-mouthed as he calls his girlfriend on stage and when she replies “yes”, he puts a ring on her finger.
Cowell tells the plasterer “it’s the wrong hand” but the 27-year-old does not mind, replying: “It’ll do for now!”
The judge adds: “I wish we could say ‘yes’ but this is better than a ‘yes.'”
Black replies: “At least I got one ‘yes’. That’ll do for me fine.”
