The entire country is in the process of absorbing the news that the Conservatives have failed to earn a majority in the 2017 General Election, and the nation’s athletes are no different.

With the exit poll suggesting a hung parliament, the result of no single party winning 326 seats or more, Gary Lineker reflected the mood of the nation fairly early on.

Before tweeting this football analogy later when it appeared that the exit poll was more or less correct.

Dame Kelly Holmes, winner of two Olympic gold medals at the Athens Olympics in 2004, was gripped by the coverage.

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen was a little more succinct.
