OutdoorNI.com does: Outdoors for beginners

YOU don't have to be stuck in a classroom to educate yourself. As everyone has headed back to school and university this month, why not enrol for a different type of learning with a course in the great outdoors? With lots of fantastic have-a-go and beginner sessions across Northern Ireland, OutdoorNI.com, in association with The Irish News, have pulled together some ideas to get you started.

:: Rise to the challenge with Tollymore National Outdoor Centre in the picturesque Mourne Mountains as you reach new heights during their 'First Steps to Climbing Skills Day' on Saturday September 26. Learn the basic skills needed to confidently climb to the top of the rock face. Alternatively, progress your skills indoors over a number of evenings by signing up to Tollymore's four-week 'First Steps Climbing Wall Skills course' between Tuesday September 22 and Tuesday October 13 and practice the basics on the indoor climbing wall.

:: Learn the basics of mountain biking with Far and Wild on the Davagh Forest mountain biking trails in Co Tyrone. Their 'Introductory Mountain Biking Essential Skills Training' will equip you with the fundamentals so you can hit the saddle with confidence.

:: Northern Ireland's coastline has some of the best surf going. To make the most of it, grab a wetsuit (they'll keep you warm whatever the weather) and catch your first wave during a surf lesson with Long Line Surf School, Benone, or Troggs Surf School, Portrush. With specially designed lessons throughout the year, tailored for beginners through to those looking to improve their skills on a board, a great day out is guaranteed.

:: Continue the fun out on the water with Belfast-based activity provider Mobile Team Adventure who regularly run beginner canoe and kayak sessions on the stunning Strangford Lough and just a stone's throw from Belfast city centre at Shaw's Bridge. Suitable for both beginners and intermediate paddlers, these fun canoe and kayak sessions are a fantastic way to learn the basics, explore and make friends.

:: Thought scuba diving was for the Maldives? Think again! Explore the underworld of the Causeway Coastline with Aquaholics Dive Centre on their 'Try a Dive' three-hour taster session. Lead by a qualified PADI instructor, you will learn the simple skills in the shallows before exploring the fascinating marine life along the coast. No experience necessary; suitable for all ages from 10 years old.
