TWO of Northern Ireland's leading motor neurone disease (MND) healthcare professionals have taken the ice bucket challenge to raise awareness and show support to their patients.

Dr Colette Donaghy, a consultant neurologist who specialises in MND and holds clinics at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, and Alison Dick, MND care network co-ordinator, said the challenge was helping raise the profile of the terminal disease in a phenomenal way.

"As a consultant neurologist who specialises in MND and runs the NI regional MND clinics, I have been thrilled to hear so many people talk about the disease and the MNDA charity though the ice bucket challenge," Dr Donaghy said.

"It raises the profile of the condition which can only serve to positively impact our efforts in trying to achieve better resources to allow optimal care of patients with MND and help support research efforts."

Ms Dick said: "My work involves caring for people with MND and their families on a daily basis so I see first hand the devastating impact this condition has for everyone it effects.

"The money raised so far is phenomenal and I hope it goes some way in the fight to find a cure for MND."
