Belfast City Council announced earlier this week that it was suspending its brown and blue bin collections with immediate effect amid health and safety concerns for staff.

Question: What do households do with their recyclable and organic waste during the coronavirus lockdown?

Answer: According to a council spokeswoman:

  • try and compost your food waste
  • if this is not possible, food waste can be put in the black bin
  • double bag any waste that may not fit in the black bin
  • try and store any recyclable waste until normal collections return

The spokeswoman said: "We would encourage residents that if possible, to consider composting their food waste. If this is not possible, food waste can be put in the black bin at this time. There will be no penalties.

"We would advise residents to double bag any household waste that may not fit in their black bin and if possible, store somewhere secure like a shed so as not to attract birds or vermin.

"If possible, we are encouraging residents to please continue to separate and store any recyclable waste until such times that our normal collection resumes. If this is not possible, it can be put in your black bin."
