Harland & Wolff launches welding academy

APPLICATIONS open at 9am on Wednesday for a new training programme which will lead to a welding certification and a full-time job at Harland & Wolff.

The welding academy (prospective employees should send their CV to recruitment@harland-wolff.com) is held in partnership with Northern Regional College and will have an element of classroom-based training followed by a two-week placement in the company.

H&W is be looking for candidates with a keen interest in the field of engineering, prior welding experience, or experience with welding codes that have lapsed and need renewed, and level of competence in manual dexterity.

At present the training programme will only be available at H&W's Belfast shipyard, but there are plans to expand the offering to other sites within the near future.

The opening of the academy comes as the Harland & Wolff Group sees all of its yards operational and amid a growing demand for skilled welders for long term employment (its welders work across a variety of projects, including wind farm and energy fabrication, shipbuilding and ship repair).

Steven Wright, general manager of the H&W Belfast shipyard, said: “We're excited to be able to launch our new welding academy. Continuing to work alongside Northern Regional College, we are committed to developing a pipeline of skills to build for the future. We now look forward to welcoming new talent onto our yard.”

Harland & Wolff's Belfast yard is one of Europe’s largest heavy engineering facilities, with deep water access, two of Europe’s largest dry docks, ample quayside and vast fabrication halls.
