HSBC UK has come out top for overall service in a Northern Ireland personal banking survey.

The lender scored a 77 per cent rating in an independent survey carried out between July 2018 and June 2019 on behalf of the Competition and Markets Authority.

Nationwide was close behind HSBC with a rating of 76 per cent.

Barclays and Halifax were in joint third place with 72 per cent.

Of the four main Northern Ireland banks, Danske performed the best with a customer rating of 69 per cent, putting it in fifth place.

As part of the overall survey, customers with personal current accounts were asked how likely they would be to recommend their provider, their provider’s online and mobile banking services, services in branches and overdraft services to friends and family.

The results show the proportion of customers who said they were 'extremely likely' or 'very likely' to recommend each service.

Customers seemed generally more satisfied with providers' online and mobile banking services.

Nationwide scored highest in this category with an 87 per cent rating, ahead of HSBC, Santander and Barclays on 83 per cent.

John French, chief executive at The Consumer Council, said the survey allows customers to see if they might benefit by switching banks.

"I particularly commend the CMA for providing information specific to banking in Northern Ireland, acknowledging the differences that exist in financial services provision in this region," he said.
