FROM outdoor picnic screenings to events at a Georgian mansion and Victorian hall, the Belfast Film Festival are planning a summer of unusual cinema experiences.

Lower Crescent Park off Botanic Avenue will be the site for the Festival's al fresco movie marathon featuring eight films over the weekend of August 6 and 7.

Grease, The Sound of Music, Dirty Dancing and Monty Python’s Life of Brian are all on the bill, plus Shakespearean treats in the form of the 1967 version of Romeo and Juliet (a Best Picture nominee) Orson Welles's Chimes at Midnight, Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing and the musical charms of Taming of The Shrew-based MGM classic Kiss Me Kate, featuring songs by Cole Porter.

Later in the month, the grounds of Malone House's Georgian mansion will provide the backdrop for an outdoor screening of Sense and Sensibility (August 21), the Jane Austen adaptation starring Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant.

"Lower Crescent Park is a great location for our movie weekend in August with plenty of choice for food and drink in the Botanic and University areas before or after the screenings," says Belfast Film Festival Director Michele Devlin.

"We have planned a two-month summer bonanza both outside and indoors."
