The Irish News has been nominated for Regional Newspaper of the Year in one of the UK’s most prestigious industry awards.

The 2024 Newspaper Awards, which “recognise excellence in the printed newspaper”, will see titles compete across 13 categories.

Irish News parent company IntoMedia has been recognised in three major categories, with The Irish News – which last year became the biggest-selling regional title in the UK - among contenders for Regional Newspaper of the Year.

An extensive rebrand of the paper has also led to a nomination for Newspaper Employee/Team of the Year, while Interpress, which prints The Irish News along with Mediahuis titles the Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life and a range of regional papers, has been named in the Regional Newspaper Printer of the Year category.

Welcoming the nominations, Irish News Editor-in-Chief Chris Sherrard said: “Making the shortlist for these prestigious awards is a fitting achievement for our hard-working team at The Irish News.

“We pride ourselves on providing the very best newspaper day and daily for our readers and they have continued to loyally support us with extremely strong sales.

“That isn’t something we ever take for granted and we will continue to work hard in order to maintain our position as the biggest-selling regional newspaper in the UK and Ireland.”

Gary Cullum, director of the Newspaper Awards, said: “Newspaper print is in decline, that is an undeniable fact. However, the printed newspaper remains integral to the success and profitability of the news media industry. Printed newspapers will evolve for many years to come and will continue to be published alongside their digital counterparts.”

The nominations follow The Irish News being named in the running for News Brand of the Year at the 2024 Regional Press Awards, with the late Irish News production journalist Dawn Egan, who died last October, also being nominated in the Designer of the Year category.
