It may be looming around the corner, but there’s still time to book a getaway for the half-term holiday – and you don’t need to spend a fortune.

“There’s no limit to what you can book last minute,” says Raphael Giacardi, head of editorial at travel deals platform, HolidayPirates, who have launched a new channel, Luxury for Less, which helps Brits find the best value deals on hotels, breaks, flights and experiences.

According to online travel agent Opodo, the majority of travellers will embark on short-haul continental journeys (75%), with 20% going long-haul intercontinental, and 6% choosing to stay at home. The top five places Brits will visit are Amsterdam, Dublin, Barcelona, Paris and Prague – proving city-break season is in full swing.

If you are hoping to grab a holiday bargain, Raphael Giacardi has a few tips…

Staying in the UK? Try a holiday park

“If you’re not too fussed about the location, holiday parks provide a great break for the whole family. Luckily, there are loads of reliable holiday parks dotted around the UK that are both fun and offer good value for money.

“Before making your booking, always check to see what sort of facilities and activities are provided. Most UK holiday parks feature a huge swimming pool with slides, plus plenty of other outdoor activities like cycling, all of which will keep the kids occupied for the entire stay. Eastbourne and Great Yarmouth are good options as destinations.”

Want to go abroad? Be flexible

“If you’re happy to be flexible about your destination, hotel and travel dates, you could end up getting a huge discount on the original price. While booking last-minute flights and holidays can result in big savings, it generally doesn’t leave you much time to sort out passports and visas. Make sure that you have all the required up-to-date documents for your destination before you book.

“If you’re travelling with children, it is worth booking a package deal, which takes things one step further by including all food and drink – as well as activities for the kids. One of the best things about booking a last-minute holiday deal has to be the fact that you get to be spontaneous and potentially land up going somewhere unexpected.”

Where to go

Cappadocia, Turkey (Alamy/PA)

“With a flight time of around four hours, Turkey may seem like a rather long journey away, but it is well worth the trip as there’s so much to see and do. Plus, it’s a top choice for a family getaway thanks to family-friendly holiday resorts and year-round attractions.

“Heraklion, Chania and Elounda in Crete are popular choices for a family stay, but you can find family-friendly resorts across the island. After you’re done exploring the Knossos archaeological site, visit picturesque beaches and impressive caves to thrilling waterparks and memorable animal parks.”
