THOMAS Mackle became the first player to win four consecutive King of the Road titles in Ballincurrig, county Cork last weekend.

In 2017 Mackle surpassed the record set by his uncle Michael Toal and this year’s win put him joint second in the all-time roll of honour.

His semi-final score on Saturday was against Cork’s Killian Kingston and Harm Weinstock. Mackle was trailing at the halfway stage but battled on to book his final place on Sunday.

In the other qualifying heat Arthur McDonagh had a last shot victory over David Murphy and so met Mackle in the final.

Mackle went on to take the honours and recorded a last shot win over McDonagh to be crowned King of the road Champion for the fourth year on-the-trot.

Meanwhile, Kelly Mallon was bidding for a seventh Queen of the Roads Title last weekend.

She was strong favourite to beat German champion Anke Klöpper and Claire O’Sullivan in the semi-finals. Mallon came from behind with two brilliant last shots to reach the final on Sunday against Silk Tulk from Holland. Mallon couldn’t find her form in the decider and Tulk took the title.

All-Ireland Junior B champion Malachy Lappin beat East Cork champion Michael O’Leary in the East Cork Oil trophy. Sean Donnolly and Aidan O Reilly also took the Honours in the Charlie McCarthy Cup when they defeated Denis Cooney and Michael O Sullivan.

In the team event, the Dutch took the honours with the Irish finishing a close second.

Elsewhere, Armagh Road Bowlers travel to Boston, USA for the All-Ireland finals next weekend.

The Armagh Branch will be represented by Patrick Mackle (Junior C), Niall Smith (Novice 1) and Barry O’Reilly (Novice 2) grades and the programme also includes eight-time All-Ireland champion Kelly Mallon who will take on Silke Tulk.

Boston will be led by 19-year-old Sean O’Mahoney, 2017 All Ireland Novice 1 Champion, with his father, five-time All-Ireland champion Florrie O’Mahoney ‘showing the road’ as his coach.
