Bowls: Ali Coleman wins Belmont City singles tournament
ALI COLEMAN added to his considerable reputation when he won the singles title at the annual Belmont City of Belfast tournament last weekend.
The extremely talented Ballymena player, a regular fixture on the Irish junior international side, lifted the crown with a five-shot defeat of his international colleague Ryan Bell from Mossley. Coleman booked his final berth when he defeated Ballymoney's Gary Kelly 21-15. The Mossley club enjoyed a measure of compensation when Adam McKeown was successful in the under-18 singles finishing 11 shots ahead of Brett Martin.
The U25 title went to Bangor's Thomas McClean who was involved in a close affair against the host club's Ryan Cavan who only went down by three shots. The pairs showdown was an all-Belmont affair with Norman Thompson and Stuart Bennett coasting to a 14-shot defeat of Davy Hamilton and Mark McPeak.
Meanwhile, it was a day of mixed fortunes for PBA clubs in the quarter-finals of the IBA Irish Senior Cup. Portrush defeated visitors Dun Laoghaire by 11 shots while Cookstown also made the most of home advantage finishing 20 shots ahead of Falls.
However, Ballymoney's attempt to lift the trophy for the first time fizzled out when they lost 78-54 to Belmont. Despite a creditable performance, Mossley went down by eight shots at Ballymena who will face Portrush in the semis while Belmont will face Cookstown.
Both ties will be played on Saturday, August 13.
