Electric Ireland Aisling Murphy Cup final: UU Magee 2-4 ATU Sligo 0-7

Ulster University, Magee are the first winners of the Electric Ireland Aisling Murphy Cup after a goal in each half upset the favourites ATU Sligo in wet and windy Belfield at the weekend.

Sligo were in front for three minutes during the first half when they went 0-2 to 0-1 up in the 13th minute. The next few minutes probably defined the game.

ATU earned a penalty two minutes later, but Player of the Match Máiréad Comer saved the shot and in the next minute Áine Magill levelled the game. A minute later Magill fired to the net and Magee were able to hold that gap for the rest of the game.

Comer and Magill were the stars of the game, the goalie safe under pressure and the Antrim senior forward picking off all but one point of her side’s total. There were also sound performances from Amy McKenna, Claire Kearns and Aoife Doyle for the Derry side.

Magill’s goal was the difference at the break, 1-2 to 0-2. But Sligo closed the gap with two points in the opening ten minutes of the second half before Magill got through for her second goal in the 40th minute.

The next two points came from Sligo and the gap was a dangerous two points entering the final five minutes. However, Comer was composed at the back and Magill relieved pressure with her third point as the game entered injury time.
