Whether he likes it or not, Tom McKibbin’s rapid rise to prominence ensures he will be marked out as a potential contender for this year’s Amgen Irish Open at Royal County Down.

The 21-year-old from Holywood took another huge leap forward this summer by making the cut at both the US Open and the Open Championship.

He will arrive at the famous Newcastle links in September (12-15) as one of Ireland’s leading professional players and he’s hungry to keep progressing and learning.

“It was a great experience to play all four rounds [at Royal Troon],” he said.

“The conditions were very tough and quite brutal. I haven’t played in weather like that for a while. To get through that and play four rounds at a Major was pretty nice. I think you learn a lot more from those big tournaments than you do anywhere else really.

“I’m just trying to concentrate on playing them [the majors] every year and give myself opportunities to play in them and progress, that’s what I’m aiming for. They make you a better golfer. The more experience you can gather at them, the better that will hold you going forward to maybe add a couple.”

McKibbin has already competed in several Irish Opens but this one, so close to home will be particularly special.

“I’m looking forward to it a lot. The golf course I have played a good few times over the last couple of years. It’s an amazing place. I don’t think the guys will understand how lucky they are to be able to play the Irish Open there. It’ll be really cool,” he said.

“We’ll be on the best course in the world and it’s going to be a really exciting week with everything that comes with it,” he said,

“I played the Irish Open at Galgorm, but it was during COVID, so there was no one there. I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the home crowds and experience what that’s like.

“Last year at The K Club was very special but I’m really looking forward to getting going in September.

“To win around a place like Royal County Down would be pretty special. Your home tournament, one I’ve been going to as a kid.

“There are a lot of great winners on that trophy. It would be pretty cool to add my name to that. It’s a very hard golf course and one that will be pretty tricky, but I’m looking forward to getting out there again.”
