In case of any confusion arising, the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies' Golf Union issued a statement yesterday setting out the position with golf in Northern Ireland.

British prime minister Boris Johnson's statement on Sunday has led to golf clubs, in England, getting ready to open on Wednesday of this week.

The conditions of play follow The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) statement last week which seems to have been accepted, other than for the make-up of the various groupings.

However, the position is not so clear in Northern Ireland as clubs must remain closed until further advised.

A 50-page explanatory document, concerning the prime minister’s statement and the next steps, was published yesterday in the House of Commons.

Following that, GUI Ulster Branch Executive Officer Kevin Stevens circulated club in the north advising them that the Executive is considering its plan for a phased, strategic approach to recovery.

The First Minister has previously stated that the Lockdown will remain for a further three weeks but that some adjustment to the exercise rules would be introduced.

It is anticipated, subject to the final agreement of the Executive, that this plan will be published today.

“To determine when golf can resume in Northern Ireland, we will require confirmation from the Northern Ireland Executive. In the meantime, we are working at protocol documents for clubs in Northern Ireland, following both the UK and the Republic of Ireland approach.

“We have written to the office of the First and Deputy First Minister, as well as, the Department of Communities & Sport NI, to seek clarity on these matters. We will then update clubs as soon as any further information is to hand,” said Mr Stevens.
