MacRory Cup: Sections tighten up as schools jostle for positions

Séamas McAleenan

THERE are just two games from round three of the Danske Bank Group games this week starting today in Eglish where the two teams at the top of Section D will battle it.

With just three teams in Section D, everyone was guaranteed football after Christmas. Both St Patrick's Maghera and Our Lady's Castleblayney have already beaten St Colman's Newry and ‘Blayney have a slightly better score difference. That means that a draw would be good enough to leave them top of the table and they won't have to take part in a play-off in the first week of January.

Our Lady's, beaten by Patrician in last February's MacLarnon Cup final, raised a few eyebrows with that win over St Colman's – but they were well worth it. Stephen Mooney scored two of the goals and Max McGinty the other and they can cause problems to any defence.

Maghera's defence was pretty tight the day they edged out St Colman's by 0-8 to 0-7 with six points from Ciarán Chambers. They will only improve the more matches they play.

I might be doing a disservice to Our Lady's by tipping Maghera in this tie that will wrap up Section D.

St Ronan's will bow out of this year's competition, unless they win at the St Paul's club grounds in Lurgan against visiting St Macartan's.

Both schools drew with Abbey CBS and both conceded late scores for that to happen. The other group games saw St Ronan's fall heavily to Patrician High who in turn narrowly lost the Monaghan derby last week by 1-8 to 0-10.

This section looks the tightest after two rounds. St Macartan's need only a draw to be safe and they should be able to achieve that.
