Derry player ratings

Odhran Lynch: Unsurprisingly found his kickouts under massive pressure. Did well in spells but lost three-in-a-row in a crucial first-half spell. Solid in the air. 6

Chrissy McKaigue: A cruel reflection on McKaigue’s performance that McBrearty was the man to kick the winner, given it was just about his only kick in open play. McKaigue did his diligent job superbly. 8.5

Brendan Rogers: Lost Jamie Brennan for two first half points but did well on occasion too. Lost a pointed free to Murphy but ran off him in the last 20 minutes and gave Derry fresh attacking legs. 6

Padraig McGrogan: Picked up Niall O’Donnell for a lot of proceedings and struggled with that assignment in the second half. 5.5

Padraig Cassidy: Ran and ran and ran until he could run no more. Was the key man in so many of Derry’s attacks, their outlet on kickouts, scoring a point for himself and scaring the life out of Donegal’s defence. 9

Gareth McKinless: Donegal pushed Ryan McHugh straight up on him to try and pin him back but fair to say McKinless won the battle. Ran out of steam with 20 minutes to go, understandably given his efforts. 7.5

Conor Doherty: Had good moments on the ball and carried well. Had a fairly free role a lot of the time defensively, picking up whoever came into his space. 6

Conor Glass: Competed really well in the air, although Michael Langan won a few as well. Kicked a superb first half score and plenty involved in the game. 6.5

Emmett Bradley: Never really got to the pitch of the game, though did cut in and fire off a fine score on his weaker right leg. Didn’t get close enough to Caolan McGonagle in the second half. 5.5

Ethan Doherty: Involved himself a fair bit out on the left wing, picked up a few breaks but never threatened to cut loose as he has in other games. 6

Niall Loughlin: Worked like a dog but slipped off a couple of tackles as he tired late on. Harsh to judge him on a defensive performance. Kicked one brilliant point but didn’t get at McGee enough. 6.5

Ciaran McFaul: Has developed into Derry’s most significant leader. His three points were out of the top drawer and the Glen man dictated their whole tempo against Eoghan Bán Gallagher. 8.5

Benny Heron: Had a really fine game in parts and kicked two points. Very unlucky with his early blazed goal chance but his fisted effort on the bar will stick in the throat for a while. 6.5

Shane McGuigan: Two points from play and two frees was in and around where you’d have expected him to be. Too sharp for McMenamin. Should have had a penalty but missed a couple of key chances too. 7

Paul Cassidy: Earned the final berth in the side but the Bellaghy youngster struggled to impose himself on the game. 5

Oisin McWilliams:
Asked to add a bit of attacking impetus but didn’t get into it much. 5.5

Niall Toner: Couple of late possessions but with no inroads. 5.5

Conor McCluskey: Not on long enough to be rated.

Paul McNeill: Not on long enough to be rated.
