ALMOST five months on from an All-Ireland Championship finished out in winter darkness, the 2021 inter-county campaign begins beneath summer skies with an all-Ulster blockbuster between familiar foes Tyrone and Donegal in Omagh on Saturday, May 15.

Drips and drabs of fixtures have filtered out over the past week, but yesterday the GAA finally unveiled its full schedule for the new-look, regionalised Allianz National League.

There was double cause for celebration too after the Ulster Council also confirmed that competitive club games could recommence in the North from Friday, May 7.

On the inter-county front, though, it is Healy Park which hosts the most eye-catching encounter of the opening weekend, Tyrone and Donegal going toe-to-toe on what promises to be a Saturday evening to savour.

Earlier that day, Down will face Mayo in Castlebar in their Division Two North opener, while Monaghan’s Division One North clash with Armagh the following afternoon – due to be a home game for Seamus McEnaney’s side – instead takes place in Enniskillen.

The Farneymen, Dublin, Down and Cork are all denied home advantage for any of their League games after breaching Covid-19 collective training guidelines.

Therefore Down’s ‘home’ game against Meath on May 23 will instead be played at the Athletic Grounds in neighbouring Armagh.

That same afternoon, Dublin’s ‘home’ clash with Kerry will be held in Thurles rather than Croke Park.

Semple Stadium will also host Cork’s ‘home’ game, against Kildare in Division Two South on May 15.

Ulster champions Cavan will open their Division Three North campaign with a derby game in Enniskillen against Fermanagh on May 15 while Rory Gallagher’s Derry are away to Longford in the same group on the same day.

Old friends will also be reunited on the opening weekend of the football League when Enda McGinley and Mickey Harte lock horns in Dundalk on May 15.

It will be a first outing at inter-county level for McGinley against a Louth side managed by his former boss and fellow Errigal Ciaran clubman.

It is the hurlers who get the return to play show on the road on May 8, however, with Antrim welcoming Clare to Corrigan Park for their Division 1B opener. Darren Gleeson’s Joe McDonagh Cup winners face a trip to Nowlan Park to face Kilkenny eight days later.

The Saffrons meet Dublin at Parnell Park on May 22 in a dress rehearsal for their Leinster Championship opener.

Down face a tough start to life in Division 2A with a trip to McDonagh Cup finalists Kerry on May 9 before Carlow come to Ballycran on May 16.

AHEAD of the resumption of competitive club matches in the North from May 7, the Ulster Council yesterday confirmed that full squad training can commence from tonight.

Pods of 15 had been able to train since April 12. Spectators are strictly forbidden, with only 100 people – including players, managers, officials, support personnel, medical staff and media – permitted to attend club matches.

Challenge matches are also permitted from May 1, subject to county committee and provincial councils being informed in advance.

Such challenge games must be played in the six counties and can only involve teams from the six counties and at club level only.

“It is anticipated that we will not be in a position to report on the potential dates for return of adult activity in Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan for a further 7-10 days,” read an Ulster GAA statement.

“This, of course, is dependent on future announcements from the Irish Government/NPHET. Underage activity, under strict conditions, can resume from 26 April.”
