SHANE Mulholland has been installed as the new manager of Down senior championship contenders Warrenpoint.

Former Down half-forward and Queen’s University manager Mulholland takes over the reins from Niall McAleenan who guided the Cumann Pheadair Naofa outfit to the brink of a first Mourne county championship since 1953 last year.

Mickey Moran’s Magpies won the 2019 decider by a point and, despite turning the tables on Kilcoo in the early stages of this year’s championship, McAleenan bowed out after Kilcoo avenged that loss with a convincing win at the semi-final stage.

It has been confirmed that Moran will remain at the Kilcoo helm next season. The Maghera native propelled the Magpies to their first Ulster title last year and retained the Frank O’Hare Cup this season.

Meanwhile, rumours that Oisin McConville has been appointed to succeed Paddy O’Rourke at Burren are wide of the mark. The former Armagh All-Ireland winner will remain in charge of Monaghan senior outfit Inniskeen Grattans.
