SPECIAL K: Tyrone’s Kyle Coney (left) and Donegal’s Kevin Cassidy will renew acquaintances this evening at Brewster Park as the sides, who drew in the group stage, contest the Dr McKenna Cup final
The Irish News - January 30 2010: Dr McKenna Cup final: Tyrone's talent pool can make statement with final victory
As Donegal prepare to take on the free-scoring Tyrone men, their supporters will draw comfort from the old adage that Mickey Harte can only pick 15 players.
Because if this year's Barrett Sports Lighting Dr McKenna Cup has proved anything, then it's the vast breadth and depth of the reservoir of talent that lies in the O'Neill county.
The statistics speak for themselves.
Tyrone have had 19 different scorers in the four games in which they amassed a total of 5-57.
Many of those goals and points came from newcomers such as Kyle Coney (1-7), Mark Donnelly (2-3), Niall McKenna (0-3) and Ronan McNabb (0-2).
It's now evident that the Red Hands are reaping the dividends of a decade of sustained success that yielded three All-Ireland minor and senior titles.
Always a county obsessed with football, Tyrone is now bursting at the seams with footballers obsessed with playing for the county.
Mickey Harte's decision to introduce an influx of young, hungry players has had the desired effect.
