Sigerson Cup round one
University College Cork 2-12 NUI Galway 1-14
SIGERSON Cup holders University College Cork were forced to dig deep to secure victory over a dogged NUI Galway outfit in Dangan yesterday afternoon.
Rory Cunningham and James McEntee got the goals for Billy Morgan’s charges, while the influential Robert Finnerty raised a green flag for the Maurice Sheridan managed NUI, the full-foward finishing with 1-9 to his name.
Despite his Corofin commitments in this weekend’s All-Ireland Club SFC final, NUI Galway captain Kieran Molloy was brought on for the second-half and his point kept them in touch, but Killian Spillane and Diarmuid O’Connor efforts got UCC over the line as Dessie Connelly missed a good chance for a late leveller.
DCU Dóchas Éireann 0-9 Garda College 0-7
DÓCHAS Éireann were pushed all the way by Garda College yesterday, but Paddy Christie’s men finally came to the fore in a two-point victory.
DCU's Paddy Small, an All-Ireland winner with Dublin, was shown a red card, while Donegal ’keeper Shaun Patton was in fine free kicking form for the Garda before he was given his marching orders late on.
Mícheál Banningan's six-point contribution was a key factor in the Dublin college's eventual victory.
